The central theme of this year's Conference was chose in light of the on-going debate accross the EU regarding the so-called Flexicurity model. Additionally, other European employment matters of great significance, such as international transfers of business, the balance of powers in discrimination cases, data privacy/workplace monitoring, collective rebundancies, international HR management issues, international variable remuneration schemes and EWC/employee representation will also be addressed.
The aims of EELA are:
- to bring together practising employment lawyers across the European union
- to improve the implementation and understanding of the social dimension
- to exchange views on the manner of such implementation
- to strengthen links between EU employment lawyers.

These congresses attract some 1000-1600 participants plus their accompanying partners. Two subjects are selected each year by the Permanent Scientific Committee. These subjects form the basis of exhaustive discussions, normally resulting in some sort of concluding statement or recommendation.

This event is being held to celebrate the decision made at the Commonwealth Law Conference held in Hong Kong in 1983 to form the Commonwealth Lawyers' Association (CLA) and the subsequent adoption of the first Constitution of the CLA in Jamaica in 1986.
The 25th Anniversary Conference gives the opportunity to participate in the promotion of the rule of law by hearing and examining the challenges to the rule of law that face us throughout the Commonwealth in places such as Pakistan, Fiji and Zimbabwe. There will also be lawyers in the front line who are dealing with these challenges on a daily basis.
