Larry Smith serves as Schwabe’s lobbyist in Washington, D.C., assisting clients with issues before the U.S. Congress and federal agencies. Larry works closely with businesses to find the best way to explain their issues in the context of what is happening in the Congress at any given moment. His deep understanding of how the legislative process works helps him identify opportunities and design successful strategies for clients.
A strong advocate in the nation’s capital
Larry has over 30 years of experience working on and around Capitol Hill for both legislators and private clients. He has served in the office of Oregon Senator Mark Hatfield, as Republican Staff Director of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and as both Deputy Sergeant at Arms and Sergeant at Arms for the entire Senate. In the private sector, he has been Manager of Corporate Relations for Herman Miller, Inc., Senior Vice President and Director of Government Relations for Burson-Marsteller, a named partner in the lobbying firm of Johnson, Smith, Dover, Kitzmiller & Stewart, Inc., and founder and President of Legislative Strategies, Inc.
Diverse industry experience
During his career as a federal lobbyist, Larry has worked on a wide range of issues including telecommunications, energy, natural resources, mergers and acquisitions, among others. His clients have included corporations, non-profits and trade associations as well as a foreign government.
