Basil A. Umari is a Senior Counsel and a resident in Houston. Basil offers efficient, careful, and professional representation in corporate bankruptcy matters. Over his 20 years of practice, Basil has represented debtors, liquidating trustees, official creditors’ committees, secured creditors, unsecured creditors, equity holders, officers and directors, patent holders, landlords, tenants, and asset purchasers in numerous corporate bankruptcy cases.
Basil has broad experience in a variety of industries. In the oil and gas sector, his current and prior representations include, among others: In re EXCO Resources, Inc. (secured creditor), In re Buccaneer Resources, LLC (Liquidating Trustee), In re Dune Energy, Inc. (Official Creditors’ Committee), and In re SemCrude, L.P. (Official Producers’ Committee, Producers Representative, and 80 individual producers).
Basil also has extensive experience in bankruptcy litigation. Representing the liquidating trustee in the BearingPoint, Inc. bankruptcy, he handled a large docket of preference actions and claim objections. In the Mirant Corporation bankruptcy, he represented the litigation trust in its $2 billion fraudulent transfer action, amassing deep expertise in fraudulent transfer law. Basil has also defended numerous companies in preference actions and claims objections brought by trustees.
Both in private practice and as a law clerk to a federal district judge, Basil has developed extensive experience in commercial litigation, including appellate briefing.
