Profile

Eduardo Santamaría is a partner in the Litigation and Arbitration Department at Garrigues, where he has pursued his entire professional career.

He specializes in civil and corporate/commercial litigation, drawing on a wealth of experience in contractual disputes, corporate lawsuits (challenges to corporate resolutions, directors’ liability, shareholders’ agreements, etc.), tortious and other forms of noncontractual liability, enforcement of foreign judgments and awards in Spain, injunctive relief or conservatory measures, etc.

His usual practice area includes the industrial sector as well as the construction, agency and distribution, banking, insurance and private equity industries.

He has acted in a qualified number of institutional arbitrations both within Spain (Spanish Court of Arbitration, Court of Arbitration of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, Civil and Commercial Court of Arbitration, Barcelona Arbitration Court, etc.) and internationally (International Court of Arbitration -ICC Paris-, Court of Arbitration for Sport -CAS Lausanne-, etc.), ad hoc arbitrations and high-profile disputes before international dispute resolution chambers (FIFA, UEFA, UCI, etc.).

He lectures on the Master’s Degree in Business Law at Universidad de Navarra and he is a visiting lecturer in several universities.

He speaks at specialist seminars on the subject of arbitration and contracts and he is a regular contributor to the World Bank publication “Doing Business” (The World Bank - IFC “Enforcing Contracts” and “Protecting Investors” and also to the World Justice Project publication “WJP Rule of Law Index”.

In 2015 Eduardo Santamaría was named one of the “40 under Forty” by Iberian Lawyer, award which recognizes the best forty lawyers from Spain and Portugal under forty years of age.

He has been appointed by the international publication Acritas in its inaugural 2017 edition and in 2018 as a “Star Lawyer”, with the following recognitions from the clients “he is really excellent dealing with disputes”, “very high-added value”, “extreme in performance” and “very talented with pleadings”.

In 2017 and 2018 he has been named by Legal 500 in the Dispute Resolution area as “Next Generation Lawyer”.

He is a member of the Madrid Bar Association, as well as the Spanish Arbitration Club.

Degree in Law from Universidad de Valladolid (2000).
Research lecturer at the Department of Procedural Law at Universidad de Valladolid [Merit scholarship awarded by the Ministry of Education and Science (1998 – 2000)].
