Profile

Irene has been involved in both the legal profession and social responsibility matters for over 20 years. In her practice area of Human Rights, Business & Sustainability, she focuses on protecting the rights of people in vulnerable conditions, such as children and adolescents, people with disabilities, and women. She is particularly concerned with the strengthening of agencies cooperating with the progress of democracy, primarily in matters regarding violence prevention, education and human rights promotion. Irene has participated as coach and facilitator in workshops and courses on the handling of local and international human rights protection mechanisms, especially those affecting the protection of women, people with disabilities, immigrants and children. She joined the firm as Executive Director of the BLP Foundation in 2016, which under her guidance evolved into the BLP’s Sustainability Management Program. She also works as Vice-President of the Centro de Acción Pro Derechos Humanos and serves as an independent consultant in her field of expertise. Her earlier background includes work as an Assistant and then Program Officer for the Inter-American Human Rights Institute. Irene graduated from Law School at the Universidad de Costa Rica in 1994, and earned a master’s degree in International Human Rights Law from American University, Washington College of Law in 1999. She has served as a member of the Human Rights, Disabilities and Gender Commission of the Costa Rican Bar Association, and is an alternate member of the National Health Research Council, a national agency responsible for monitoring the enforcement of the Biomedical Research Act. In addition, Irene is a member of the Board of Directors of the Yo puedo, ¿Y vos? Foundation, whose goal is foster the social integration of people with Down Syndrome. She has also written position papers and procedure handbooks on a number of topics, including gender equality, labor and immigration, childhood, and violence prevention in the country and the region. Irene is based in San José, Costa Rica.
