Karl is a member of the Intellectual Property and Corporate Practice Groups in the Firm’s Seattle office. Mr. Gerner focuses his practice on privacy, cybersecurity, and e-commerce matters, and is a certified information privacy professional (CIPP/US) with experience handling consumer personal information, along with other privacy and cybersecurity matters (including the California Consumer Privacy Act and EU General Data Protection Regulation) for a broad range of clients ranging from EdTech and FinTech startups to Fortune 500 and multinational companies in the hospitality, retail, logistics, and online dating industries.

Mr. Gerner regularly assists clients with data privacy compliance programs, data inventories and mapping, external privacy statements, internal privacy policies, data processing agreements, data subject request responses, and negotiating contracts related to the transfer of customer or personal information.

He is also experienced in a broad range of transactional matters including end user license agreements, material transfer agreements; as well as litigation involving trade secrets, dress, and marks, restrictive covenants, fiduciary duties, fraudulent transfers, and other complex commercial claims.

Mr. Gerner is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and serves as a Director of the Military Spouse J.D. Network.

  • Created dynamic template data subject request response letters in support of Fortune 500 hospitality company’s privacy compliance program spanning more than 75 countries.
  • Advised American-based multinational chain of gas station convenience stores on the creation and implementation of a California Consumer Protection Act compliance program.
  • Counseled international properties of Fortune 500 hospitality company on pre-dispute resolution of cybersecurity incident involving email spoofing.
  • Advised niche internet- and mobile-dating company on U.S. privacy and Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) compliance.
  • Written online privacy policies for companies from numerous industries including telehealth providers, an internationally distributed beer & wine brand, an ed-tech startup, and non-profit organizations.
  • Counseled companies on specific disclosure requirements around products including amusement park guest engagement technologies including location and other data, air conditioning unit diagnostic data including location data, internet dating products which include sensitive categories of personal information.
  • Successfully negotiated payment of $100,000 prize withheld from a cloud architecture startup after winning start-up competition.
