Profile

Liz is a banking and finance partner at Shoosmiths and leads the national Real Estate Finance practice.

She has over 20 years of experience acting on a wide range of high profile structured real estate finance matters, often with complex capital structures, both domestic and cross border.

Liz is known for having a highly constructive approach to deals. She is experienced in acting both for the lenders and borrowers, bringing a balanced view to transactions.

Clients include most of the major UK clearing banks as well as other financial institutions, alternative lenders, senior debt funds, institutional investors, public bodies, corporates and developers.

Liz is ranked in the Hall of Fame in Legal 500 and is a highly ranked lawyer in Chambers.

Recent experience includes:

  • advising Vita Student on a £88.5m loan from Blackstone relating to PBSA at York
  • advising a high street bank on the refinance of an existing £120m revolving credit facility for a national housebuilder
  • advising Renaker on a £120m development funding from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority to fund the construction of two high profile skyscrapers in Manchester, known as Collier’s Yard and The Blade. The deal also included development of a multi storey car park, an obligation for Renaker to build a single-form entry academy free school with capacity for 210 children and a 26 place nursery on an adjoining plot to The Blade. The deal involved complex cross collateralisation arrangements, title, s106 and security arrangements
  • advising a leading private bank on £80m facilities to Mordril IO Limited and Mordril Industrial Limited, BVI registered entities, to refinance their portfolios of industrial properties across the UK
  • advising Vita Student on a Euro 50m mezzanine loan from Sculptor Real Estate relating to the development of two PBSA schemes in Barcelona, Spain
  • advising a high street bank on £30m senior and mezzanine facilities, including a complex intercreditor agreement and hedging, relating to the acquisition of a retail park
  • advising Crown Street (Manchester) Limited (a Renaker company) on aggregate funding of £128m to develop two high-rise residential BTR developments in Manchester
  • advising Hotel la Tour on £22m development financing from Coutts & Co of a new landmark hotel in Milton Keynes
  • advising a care home developer and operator on £12m development facilities for a new care home
  • advising GMCA and GMHF on various projects including real estate finance loans and grant funding agreements in the residential development, housebuilder and further education sectors

Liz spent eight years in the City training and working at Wilde Sapte and then Sidley's London office on big ticket structured real estate finance deals, often with significant cross border elements. Liz returned to her home city of Manchester in 2005 and has continued to specialise in real estate finance. She was a partner at DLA Piper for three years before joining Shoosmiths in 2013.
