Profile

Luis is a founding partner of BLP and brings 20 years of experience to the legal profession. Prominent publications such as The Legal 500, Chambers & Partners, Latin Lawyer, Who’s Who Legal, and the IFLR 1000 have named him to the top rank of practitioners in Business Law, Real Estate & Hospitality, and Energy & Infrastructure. Who’s Who Legal recognizes Luis as one of the foremost legal experts in Costa Rica. In Real Estate & Hospitality, Luis concentrates on the development of Costa Rican coastal and urban areas. In Business Law, he counsels a list of national and multinational organizations on a broad range of day-to-day matters, while specializing in mergers and acquisitions and private equity issues. His Energy & Infrastructure practice counsels on regulated industries, project finance and infrastructure, national and international bidding processes, energy contracts and permit procurement, and provides representation before relevant governmental authorities. Prior to founding Business Law Partners, Luis worked at the international accounting firm KPMG for 11 years, attaining the rank of Partner. In 2003, Luis shared a vision with his friend and fellow lawyer, David Gutiérrez, that lawyers must become business law partners to their clients in order to expand legal advice into successful endeavors. This concept led to a new model of law practice. Over the past 15 years, Luis’ management ability, wisdom and foresight have guided BLP’s exponential growth. After graduating from the Law School of the Universidad de Costa Rica in 1994, Luis was chosen as a Fulbright scholar at Georgetown University where he earned an LLM in 1997, along with a Diploma on Foundations of American Law. Luis is a member and former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Costa Rican Chapter of YPO/WPO (formerly, Young Presidents’ Organization and World Presidents’ Organization, respectively). He is a Director of the Yo Emprendedor Association for rising entrepreneurs, and a founding member of the Costa Rican Association of International Law. His other memberships include the International Bar Association, the Urban Land Institute, and the Energy Committee of the Costa Rican Union of Chambers and Associations of the Private Business Sector. Luis is based in San José, Costa Rica.
