Matthew is a commercial litigator who specialises in advising UK corporates on shareholder and warranty claims, professional negligence, contractual disputes, defamation and financial services claims and pensions disputes.

This includes the execution and defence of search and seizure orders, including acting as the court-appointed supervising solicitor on the execution of such orders.

High profile cases where Matthew has advised include:

  • the judicial review claim against the serious fraud office (SFO) acting for one of the interested parties in challenging the duties of the SFO under a deferred prosecution agreement and disclosure obligations in relation to a Bribery Act prosecution brought against Company Directors; and
  • acting for the Plantagenet Alliance (descendants of King Richard III) in their challenge over the burial of the king’s remains located in Leicester, a case which attracted worldwide press interest and appeared regularly on local and national radio and television.

Additionally, he is head of Shoosmiths’ Leeds office and responsible for the firm’s contribution to, and profile within, the local business community.

Matthew is a member of the Professional Negligence Lawyers Association and the Association of Pensions Lawyers.

He joined Shoosmiths in 2017.
