Profile

Matt is a commercial litigator who represents and advises policyholders navigating complex insurance matters.

Matt provides comprehensive counsel to clients faced with challenging risk management and insurance issues. He has represented clients around the country in federal and state courts, and he has arbitrated before domestic and international tribunals.

In addition, Matt maintains an active commitment to pro bono service. He volunteers extensively with the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project and co-authored a US Supreme Court amicus brief in Uzuegbunam v. Preczewski.

While in law school, Matt served on the William & Mary Law Review and was a member of both the Moot Court and Alternative Dispute Resolution competition teams. Matt interned with the Honorable David J. Novak in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the Virginia Solicitor General’s Office, and the Honorable Eric G. Bruggink in the US Court of Federal Claims.

  • Secured multi-million dollar award through international arbitration regarding commercial general liability coverage for chemical plant explosion.
  • Represented private equity firm litigating employee theft claim for fraud and forgery.
  • Provided claim valuation for hedge fund exploring litigation funding opportunities.
  • Counseled healthcare organization through event cancelation for multiple conferences hosting thousands of domestic and international attendees.
  • Advised interstate trade association on availability of captive insurance and other alternative risk management options for industry facing hardened insurance markets.
  • Mediated resolution of reinsurance dispute that included bad faith allegations against client for handling of underlying claim.
  • Arbitrated a builder’s all-risk policy claim against multi-insurer tower under AAA rules.
  • Settled multiple errors and omissions claims involving millions of dollars of exposure prior to commencement of litigation.
