Profile

Rory is an Associate and advises on a wide variety of contentious and non-contentious employment law matters. He works with clients across a range of sectors including manufacturing, retail, automotive, investment, technology, pharmaceutical, and sports. Rory provides practical, down-to-earth advice to employer clients on matters such as settlement agreements and employee exits, disciplinary and grievance procedures, redundancy processes, pre-claim conciliation and litigious matters in the Employment Tribunal but is equally able to represent individuals.

As a business immigration specialist, Rory also assists clients in recruiting and retaining top talent from across the globe, and high net worth individuals with their visa requirements. He is a member of the Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association (“ILPA”) with experience in making sponsor licence, skilled worker, global mobility and British citizenship applications. Rory’s expertise in employment law compliments our immigration offering as he is able to advise clients on the 360 degree nature of the recruitment and retention process.

Rory’s recent work includes:

  • advising a global healthcare organisation in response to sensitive allegations of discrimination and harassment within the senior management team, and dealing with a subsequent exit by way of settlement agreement;
  • assisting a multinational manufacturing business in its to defence to complaints of unfair dismissal, discrimination and harassment within the Employment Tribunal, which also involved alleged fraud and the misappropriation of company funds;
  • representing a Championship football club in the recruitment of their overseas players, managers, coaches and backroom staff;
  • advising a world-leading agricultural business on their obligations as an employer in respect of the Agency Worker Regulations 2010;
  • assigning certificates of sponsorship on behalf of the UK’s largest independent fibre operator;
  • advising a multinational retail conglomerate on their right to work policies and the recruitment of senior leaders into the United Kingdom;
  • representing one of the largest independent music production and record companies in the UK on the sponsorship of top global talent;
  • assisting with the restructure of a multi-national household cleaning manufacturer by negotiating the exit of multiple individuals across the organisation; and
  • making various applications for strike out and for unless orders in the Employment Tribunal and the objection of various applications in the Employment Appeal Tribunal, relating to claims of unfair dismissal and disability discrimination.

Rory has also hosted a number of in-person and online roundtable discussions in respect of both Employment and Immigration matters. He frequently contributes to the wider legal sector by writing articles, comments and updates on behalf of Shoosmiths LLP and has delivered in-person and online training on right to work checks, changes to immigration law and the digitalisation of the immigration service.
