As the author of the first four editions of the textbook, The Law of Shipbuilding Contracts, published by Informa Law Library – the fourth edition of which was published in November 2012 - Simon has extensive knowledge of English law on marine construction. He has been cited in each edition of The World's Leading Shipping and Maritime Lawyers since 1998.

Simon lectures regularly on a range of shipbuilding and offshore issues, including contracts for the construction and employment of FSOs and FPSOs, and is also a contributing author to Ship Building, Sale and Finance and Force Majeure and Frustration of Contract, also published by Informa Law Library.

Simon is recognised in the 2020 UK edition of The Legal 500, Legalease, the international directory of law firms on their elite list of leading individuals in shipping. Previously Legal 500 reported that he "very experienced" and that "clients praise …. Simon Curtis for his first-rate knowledge of the law, vast experience in the area and sound tactical sense.” Simon has been recognised as one of the “top five” maritime lawyers in the UK in the Guide to the Best of the Best, Legal Media Group since 1998, and recognised as one of the world’s foremost legal practitioners in the shipping category of Who’s Who Legal, Law Business Research since 2008, when it was first published.

Simon is a leading lawyer in the Shipping section of the 2019 edition of Chambers UK, Chambers and Partners, which describes him as “a heavyweight who is highly regarded in the [shipping] industry and very tuned in and knowledgeable in the shipping field."
