Profile

Steve advocates for clients in all aspects of patent property law across a variety of technologies.

With an intellectual property practice encompassing mechanical devices, remote monitoring and control systems, telecommunications systems, e-commerce services and financial services, Steve advises clients on complex issues of claim construction, infringement, and validity in both patent litigation and post-grant review proceedings. He also provides advice to clients on patent portfolio management and strategy.

Steve’s clients come from a broad array of technology sectors and include medical device manufacturers, consumer goods retailers, financial institutions, computer and software technology companies, and e-commerce technology providers. He has significant patent litigation experience in the Eastern District of Texas, the District of Delaware, the Eastern District of Virginia, and before the International Trade Commission. He has also participated in several Federal Circuit appeals. Additionally, Steve has significant patent prosecution and post-grant proceeding experience with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to joining the firm, and following graduation from the United States Naval Academy, Steve served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the US Navy from 1992 to 2004. From 2004 to 2007, he worked at Strategic Insight, Ltd, supporting the Naval Sea Systems Command on Navy shipbuilding programs. Steve joined the firm as a patent clerk in 2007 while earning his law degree from George Washington University Law School.

He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Relevant Experience

  • Participates in all aspects of patent litigation including pre-filing diligence, motions practice, invalidity contentions, infringement contentions, claim construction, expert report preparation, expert and fact witness deposition preparation, creating and managing budgets for litigation, and pre-trial preparation.
  • Participates in all aspects of post-grant proceedings relating to mechanical, electrical, and electronic devices and systems, including ex parte reexamination, inter partes review, and covered business method review.
  • Prepares and prosecutes design and utility patent applications in the mechanical, electrical, and electronic/computer-based arts including inventions relating to agricultural devices, radar systems, parking technology, portable electronic devices, telecommunications systems, point of sale devices and financial services.
  • Performs pro bono intellectual property work, including providing copyright advice, for a non-profit company.
  • Conducts due diligence, freedom-to-operate, validity, and patentability analyses, and prepares formal legal opinions reflecting conclusions of such analyses on mechanical, electronic, and electrical devices, as well as e-commerce and financial services programs.
  • Performs pro bono intellectual property work, including obtaining patents for young inventors.
