Tim Shannon is a commercial litigator specializing in intellectual property litigation — particularly patent and patent "troll" litigation in a variety of high-tech fields. Tim has also maintained a vigorous commercial litigation practice, representing a variety of companies in the energy, manufacturing, and securities fields in state and federal courts throughout the country.

Prior to joining Verrill Dana, Tim practiced in the #1-ranked IP litigation practice group of WilmerHale. While there and since, Tim has handled patent cases involving a wide range of technologies, including software, data- and telecommunications, online banking, computer chip manufacturing, computerized mammogram screening, controlled fluid delivery in medical devices, spinal fixation, and blood glucose testing. Tim's experience spans the full range of litigation: from the initial complaint through discovery, Markman, trial (both bench and jury), and appeal. He has represented clients in the Federal Circuit on cases ranging from a few hundred thousand dollars to $250 million.

In parallel with his patent litigation practice, Tim has represented a variety of companies in complex commercial disputes, ranging from complex energy contract disputes to securities actions. In addition to first-chair trial experience, Tim has briefed and/or appeared before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the First Circuit, and the Federal Circuit.

Tim also maintains a substantial pro bono practice, most recently representing a teenage boy in an appeal to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court concerning a family matter. He has previously represented Algerian-born detainees held at Guantanamo Bay ("GTMO") seeking transfer out of GTMO.

When not practicing law, Tim is active in local, state, and federal politics. He is chairman of the Yarmouth Town Democratic Committee and a member of the Obama for Maine Finance Committee. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine, and is a devoted husband and father of two fantastic kids.
