Myanmar Opens for International Flights, Restarts E-Visa System

April, 2022 - Segolene Leffy

Myanmar will this month re-open for international flight arrivals after a two-year ban and will restart online visa applications, citing a significant decrease in COVID-19 infections across the country.

The decision to resume foreign flights was made in line with the latest COVID-19 restrictions issued by the Ministry of Health under the State Administration Council (“SAC”) and was announced as a measure to support the Myanmar economy.

The SAC’s Central Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment for COVID-19 said in a public statement that the suspension on commercial airline arrivals would end on 17 April. The ban has been in place since 29 March 2020.

From April 17, all foreign travelers to Myanmar must be fully vaccinated with vaccines approved by the Ministry of Health, which has a list of acceptable vaccines on its website. Documents must be presented that show the traveler had received a vaccine more than 14 days before arrival.

A negative RT-PCR test result, issued within 72 hours prior to arrival, must be presented at the departure airport and upon entry to Myanmar. Children under 6 years old are exempt from the RT-PCR test but must be accompanied by a vaccinated parent or guardian.

Upon arrival, all travelers are required to quarantine at a designated hotel for five days during which time they must take a RT-PCR test administered by a laboratory approved by the Ministry of Health.

Travelers who display COVID-19 symptoms, including high fever, will be isolated and taken to a hospital, hotel or treatment center designated by the Ministry of Health in accordance with the prevailing health protocols.

Foreign nationals must bear all costs associated with any quarantine or treatment. Please note, these stipulations are subject to change on short notice.

The Ministry of Immigration and Population said its online e-Visa application system would resume and applications for business visas would be permitted as of Friday, 1 April. New e-Visa applications were suspended on 20 March 2020.
