Japanese Knotweed

September, 2008 -

Japanese knotweed is an extremely invasive plant which is capable of damaging property and can grow through concrete or even the floors of houses.    It is difficult to eradicate and its disposal is considered to be "controlled waste" for the purposes of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.   Knotweed will often be apparent on inspection but this will not necessarily always be the case. A fragment of root as small as 0.8g can grow to form a new plant.

The Commercial Property Standard Enquiries (“CPSE’s”) do not ask questions about the presence or treatment of knotweed on property, but this is something which a prudent purchaser or lender will want to know about for relevant properties.
