Maine Coastline Owners Protected From Commercial Seaweed Harvesting

 

On May 16, 2019, the Island Institute published an article, "Seaweed Ruling Hinged on Property Rights, Definition of Plant." The article discusses the court ruling that owners of Maine's coastline are protected from unauthorized commercial seaweed harvesting within the intertidal zone of their shorefront property. It states that the Maine high court's decision to the U.S. Supreme Court is a possibility, but not likely. Environmental attorney Gordon Smith was quoted in the article, "I've heard talk of a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court, but there's no legitimate basis for the Supreme Court to hear an appeal.
