World Services Group (WSG) Congratulates Member Jaime Carey, Managing Partners at Carey in Chile, on Receiving Latin Lawyer’s Law Firm Leader of the Year Award Recipient

June, 2020 - United States of America

WSG congratulates Jaime Carey, Managing Partner at Carey, on receiving Latin Lawyer’s prestigious Law Firm Leader of the Year award. Through his leadership, mentoring of staff and strategic approach to law firm management, Mr. Carey has grown the firm into one of the most successful in Latin America and the largest in Chile.

Mr. Carey began his law career over 40 years ago when he joined his grandfather’s law firm, Carey y Cía, which was established in 1905 and covered several key transactional and non-transactional practice areas, including M&A; banking and finance; construction; labor; and tax.

He then became Partner in 1986 when he moved into a law firm management role. At the same time, Chile’s emerging economy was starting to experience a rising increase in foreign investment and need for local firms from international banks and companies. Having bilingual lawyers with experience working abroad, the firm stood apart with its strong experience with how New York and London firms operated and what international clients needed.

Soon after being made partner, one of his clients, US explosives company Austin Powder, made him a board member. He was asked to help guide the company through its regional expansion. He became close with the CEO, acting as his trusted adviser and being present throughout the planning and execution of the company’s expansion.

His experience at Austin Powder also helped him learn ways a manager can help their business grow and during his early years as Partner, he helped drive the firm’s expansion plans. In addition to just investing in what the market already had to offer, he led the firm with developing its own technologies for to improving internal systems including for security, marketing and client services.

He was also committed to a firm structure that was more equitable and would bring talented younger partners into who were given equal participation in the firm’s equity. And, had partner compensation was not dictated by practice area, something he says has helped generate a real sense of ownership from every partner, as well as a culture of collaboration.

To date, he continues to lead the firm with a strong focus on good relations, both internally and externally, and is committed to the firm’s people and talent.

In addition to his roles at Carey, he also served as WSG Chairman from 2004-05 and Chair of the Legal Practice Division of the International Bar Association from 2017-18. He is a board member of Sencorp, Banmédica (UnitedHealth Group) and Evercrisp (Frito Lay Chile); and chairman of the board of MetLife Chile.

Once again, congratulations to Jaime Carey on this momentous occasion, and WSG also thanks his firm, Carey, and his colleagues for exhibiting the highest standard of quality and adding significant value to the organization.
