Patterson Belknap Announces Three New Partners and Three Counsel

Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP is pleased to announce that, effective January 1, 2022, Douglas L. Tang, Amy N. Vegari, and Timothy A. Waters will become partners of the Firm, and Susan M. Vignola, Lisa Wang, and Justin Zaremby will become counsel.

Douglas L. Tang practices in the Firm’s Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation practice group, where he advises clients on a wide variety of employee benefits, employment, and executive compensation matters, both in the course of clients’ day-to-day business dealings and in connection with corporate transactions. His practice includes the design and implementation of qualified plans, church plans, and other retirement plans, equity-based and other incentive plans, and nonqualified deferred compensation arrangements. He also advises on the negotiation of employment and separation agreements. From 2008 to 2009, he served as a law clerk to the Hon. Theodore T. Jones of the New York State Court of Appeals. Mr. Tang received his J.D., magna cum laude, from St. John’s University School of Law and B.S. from New York University, Leonard N. Stern School of Business.

Amy N. Vegari practices in the Firm’s Litigation department, where she focuses on complex commercial litigation and antitrust law. Her practice includes class action defense, white collar defense and investigations, and pharmaceutical litigation. Ms. Vegari represents clients through all stages of litigation, including pre-litigation counseling, mediation, trial, and appeal. Prior to joining the Firm, Ms. Vegari served as a law clerk to the Hon. Michael A. Chagares of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and to the Hon. Robert B. Kugler of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. Ms. Vegari received her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review. She received her Ph.D. from Brown University and A.B. from Harvard University.

Timothy A. Waters practices in the Firm’s Litigation department, where he represents clients in a range of complex commercial litigation matters in federal and state courts, and in international arbitrations. Mr. Waters is an active member of the Firm’s Anti-Counterfeiting practice, and routinely represents major corporations, including pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, in large-scale litigations involving counterfeit and gray-market products. He also advises clients on anti-counterfeiting and other brand-protection strategies. Mr. Waters’ practice also includes complex contractual disputes and patent infringement cases, as well as representing large law firms in legal malpractice actions. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School and B.A., with highest distinction, from the University of California, Berkeley.

Susan M. Vignola practices in the Firm’s Tax-Exempt Organizations practice group, where she represents a range of private foundations and public charities, including educational and cultural institutions, social justice and advocacy organizations, family foundations, donor-advised fund sponsoring organizations, animal rights and conservation groups, and international cross-border philanthropy organizations, as well as other tax-exempt entities including social welfare organizations and trade associations. She counsels clients and provides critical support on a wide variety of matters throughout an organization’s life cycle, including formation, operation and dissolution, corporate board governance and fiduciary matters, navigating excise tax rules applicable to private foundations, donor-advised fund giving, lobbying and political campaign activity, corporate transactions and restructuring, joint ventures and funding partnerships, grantmaking including cross-border philanthropy, endowments and investment management, and other matters of state and federal law and compliance. Ms. Vignola received her J.D. from New York University School of Law, M.A. from George Washington University, and B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to her legal career, Ms. Vignola spent over a decade working for non-profit institutions in the U.S. and overseas.

Lisa Wang practices in the Firm’s Tax-Exempt Organizations, Intellectual Property, and Art and Museum Law practice groups. She represents private collectors, family offices, galleries, art advisors, and artists on all aspects of art law with a broad transactional and advisory practice including artwork purchases and sales, consignments, loans, commissions, and gifts. Ms. Wang further represents a wide-range of private foundations and public charities on art-related matters, as well as tax-exempt organization matters. She has particular experience in intellectual property-related matters in the art, non-profit, and philanthropic sectors. Ms. Wang received her J.D. from Yale Law School, M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of California, Berkeley.

Justin Zaremby practices in the Firm’s Tax-Exempt Organizations practice group, where he represents a wide range of tax-exempt entities including universities; museums and other cultural institutions; artist-endowed and family foundations; donor-advised funds; human rights organizations; business leagues; and social clubs. Mr. Zaremby has significant experience advising clients in connection with corporate governance and transformational charitable giving, and his practice includes a special focus on the intersection of corporate transactions and tax-exempt organizations, helping clients with program and mission-related investments; structuring joint ventures with for-profit companies; and advising on mergers, financing, and restructuring. From 2010 to 2011, Mr. Zaremby served as a law clerk to the Hon. José A. Cabranes of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School, Ph.D. from Yale University, and B.A., with distinction, from Yale College.
