Garrigues named “Tax Firm of the Year” in Spain for the fifth year in a row

May, 2009 - Madrid, Spain

Garrigues’ tax practice celebrated a significant milestone in the legal industry by winning the European award for “Tax Firm of the Year” in Spain for the fifth year running, thus making it the only firm to walk off with top honors at all of the annual ‘European Tax Awards’ presented by the publication International Tax Review to recognize the excellence of European firms in the field of taxation. The awards ceremony took place at London’s Dorchester Hotel.

The Firm also made the final shortlist in the categories of “Transfer Pricing Firm of the Year” in Spain and “European M&A Tax Transaction of the Year”. Garrigues’ Portuguese tax practice, set up three years ago, matched last year’s success and claimed a place among Portugal’s top six firms.

Garrigues’ Tax Department currently comprises over 600 professionals specializing in international taxation, transfer pricing, VAT and indirect taxes, local taxation, family businesses, and tax procedures and litigation.

As well as recognizing the Department, the panel of judges also took into account the Firm’s strength in the international market. In the wake of the new offices opening recently in Romania and Tangiers, Garrigues can now boast an international network of ten offices spanning Western Europe, North Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia.

Against this backdrop, another of Garrigues’ key strengths was its membership – as one of the founders – of Taxand, a global network of independent pure tax firms drawing together more than 2,000 professionals from over forty firms across the globe. A further eight Taxand member firms emerged victorious from the awards ceremony. Member firms from Cyprus (Eurofast Taxand), Greece (Zepos & Yannopoulos), Ireland (William Fry Tax Advisors), Luxemburg (Atoz), Malta (Avanzia Tax Advisors) and Turkey (Erdikler) picked up awards for “Tax firm of the Year”, while French firm Arsene Taxand won in the ‘Transfer Pricing Firm of the Year’ category, and Ukrainian firm Magisters took top spot in both categories.
