Shepherd and Wedderburn Appointed to Advise the Scottish SPCA

November, 2010 - Edinburgh, Scotland

Leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn has been appointed as legal advisers by the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA).

The firm will provide a range of services including charity, property, planning, construction and employment advice.

The team will be led by Malcolm Rust, partner and head of the firm’s charities group. Malcolm has over 15 years’ experience advising on the law and regulation of charities in Scotland and has worked with charity clients on the regulatory and economic challenges facing those operating in the sector in Scotland.

Shepherd and Wedderburn’s charities team has experience working with large and small charities, establishing an impressive track record in an area of the law that has seen many changes in recent years.

Malcolm Rust said: “As one of Scotland’s best-known charities, the Scottish SPCA appointment is a significant coup for Shepherd and Wedderburn’s charities team. It is important in the current climate for charities to recognise the importance of working with a multi-disciplinary advisory team. We offer a broad range of expertise to our charity clients, covering a breadth of practice areas, to ensure their needs are fully and expertly met. The brief promises to be engaging and varied, and our team is eager to start working with the Society.”

The Scottish SPCA will join Shepherd and Wedderburn’s existing portfolio of charities clients, which includes: Barnardo’s, Capability Scotland, Edinburgh Leisure, Scottish Episcopal Church and the Scottish Community Foundation.

The Scottish SPCA is Scotland's animal welfare charity and aims to prevent cruelty to animals and encourage kindness and humanity in their treatment.

The charity rescues and rehomes thousands of abused and abandoned animals every year, runs a free education programme for Scottish primary schools and is a reporting agency to the procurator fiscal.

Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said: “We have an extremely varied and challenging workload and the demands we are facing are increasing dramatically.

“It is essential to have expert legal advice available and we look forward to working with Shepherd and Wedderburn’s charities team.”
