GLM - Gabinete Legal Moçambique, a PLMJ International Legal Network member firm, has been nominated in three of the seventeen categories of the African Legal Awards, given by the leading British publication, Legal Week. GLM is nominated in the categories “M&A Team of the Year”, “Commercial Team of the Year” and “Corporate Social Responsibility Firm of the Year”.

According to the partner who heads GLM - Gabinete Legal Moçambique, Tomás Timbane, “these nominations are extremely important, not only for GLM, but also for the Mozambican legal profession in general. They are evidence the quality and skills of our lawyers and the importance of our partnership with a leading foreign law firm. I cannot go without mentioning the work done with the PLMJ Foundation. The focus on Mozambican artists has been fundamental to putting into practice our social responsibility policy, which is crucial in this country.”

In the category “M&A Team of the Year”, GLM has been nominated for a deal that was also recognised by The American Lawyer at its Global Legal Awards. The deal involved the acquisition of a participating interest in an offshore oil block in the Rovuma Basin in Mozambique. This deal was recognised as one of the largest in the area of energy and natural resources carried out in Eastern Africa and Mozambique over recent years, with a value of around USD 2.5 billion. The deal was handled by a large multidisciplinary from GLM and PLMJ coordinated in PLMJ by Ana Oliveira Rocha (co-head of the energy team; oil and gas), Marta Pedro and Miguel Spínola (both of the Mozambique Desk) and in GLM by Josina Correia (oil and gas) and Amina Abdala (public law and regulatory).

The legal advice provided to the television and mobile communications company, Multichoice Africa guaranteed GLM’s nomination in the category “Commercial Team of the Year”. Multichoice Africa receive legal support and advice from a multidisciplinary team from GLM and PLMJ coordinated, in international matters, by Miguel Spínola (corporate, commercial and M&A, and head of the Mozambique Desk) and by Josina Correia of GLM (corporate, commercial and M&A).

Besides these two categories, GLM and PLMJ are also nominated for “Corporate Social Responsibility Firm of the Year”, a nomination that recognises GLM’s social responsibility work in supporting the activities carried on by the PLMJ Foundation in Mozambique and the initiatives organised with Mozambican artists.

GLM and PLMJ have been nominated in the African Legal Awards alongside leading international firms such as Allen & Overy, Norton Rose Fulbright, Slaughter and May, Herbert Smith Freehills and DLA.

Legal Week has been organising the Africa Legal Awards since 2012 as a way to highlight and reward African law firms that achieve excellence and innovation in the legal sector. Africa has been at the top of the international agenda when it comes to movements involving law firms and for the important roles these firms play in investments and infrastructures. The results will be announced at a ceremony in Johannesburg taking place on 31 October.
