José Miguel Júdice appointed as arbitrator at Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague

December, 2014 - Lisbon, Portugal

José Miguel Júdice, PLMJ founding partner and head of PLMJ Arbitration, has been appointed as an arbitrator at the prestigious Permanent Court of Arbitration (“PCA”) in The Hague. With this appointment, José Miguel Júdice joins the exclusive roster of arbitrators, which has four lawyers from each of the member states. He is also a member of roster of arbitrators of ICSID (the arbitration centre created by the Washington Convention, at the World Bank)
The PCA, created in 1899, is the world’s oldest institute for the resolution of international disputes. It is an intergovernmental organisation of 116 member states with its seat in The Hague in The Netherlands.
Founded to facilitate arbitration and other ways of resolving disputes between states, the PCA has become and modern, multifaceted institution that is now perfectly placed at the juncture between public and private international law to meet the international community’s dispute resolution needs.
The PCA was created to provide dispute resolution services in disputes between States related, for example, to territorial disputes involving delimitation of borders and human rights disputes. However, the PCA broadened its area of work to cover international investment protection arbitration and commercial arbitrations under the UNCITRAL Rules.
José Miguel Júdice was recently the Presiding Arbitrator of the Arbitral Tribunal which, with administrative support from the PCA, resolved a dispute between a British company (Rurelec) and its US subsidiary (Guaraccachi) with Bolivia resulting from the nationalisation of an electricity producing company.
