PLMJ senior associates - Sara Estima Martins, from the European law and competition practice, Rodrigo Formigal, from the banking and finance practice and Filipa Cansado Carvalho, from the arbitration practice, were the lawyers from the firm recognised in this first issue of the Rising Stars section of Expert Guides. Rising Stars identifies promising young international lawyers from each country on an annual basis.

Rodrigo Formigal is 35 years old and has a law degree from the Faculty of Law of Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Oporto. He has been involved in numerous operations including: advising the arranger and issuer in establishing a bank bond programme; advising the joint global coordinators and joint bookrunners on a capital increase with the public offer of subscription rights for shares in Banco Comercial Português, S.A; and advising Deutsche Bank AG Sucursal em Portugal on a consumer credit securitisation operation.

Sara Estima Martins is also 35 years old and has a law degree from the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra. Over recent years, she has been involved in numerous operations and cases and, among others, has represented European companies and associations from the fruit and vegetables sector cases that became legal actions to annul European Commission Regulations. She has also advised on the competition issues arising in a number of privatisation processes.

Filipa Cansado Carvalho has a law degree from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. Her main work is as a lawyer in international arbitration (although she also acts as an arbitrator). Over recent years, she has represented companies in commercial disputes, foreign States, and companies against Foreign States, particularly in commercial disputes and disputes involving various types of concessions.

The Expert Guides are a prestigious series of guides to the legal profession that provide an annual analysis of lawyers, consultants and other legal professionals from around the world, in all areas of legal practice. These guides are based on the feedback and votes of fellow lawyers.

In Portugal, only three lawyers from PLMJ and three lawyers from MLGTS were recognised as Rising Stars in this new guide from the Expert Guides series by renowned international publisher Euromoney.
