MinterEllison launches Human Resources & Industrial Relations practice in Western Australia – two market-leading partners and their team joining the firm

March, 2016 - Australia

MinterEllison today announced it is launching a Human Resources & Industrial Relations (HR&IR) practice in Western Australia, to be led by laterally recruited partners Kathy Reid and Craig Boyle.

Mr Boyle commences at MinterEllison next week and Ms Reid will arrive before the end of this financial year.

The two partners will be joined by their team of experienced employment, industrial relations and safety lawyers.

Once the full team is on board, MinterEllison's new HR&IR practice in the West will initially comprise eight lawyers – the two partners, two senior associates, one associate, and three lawyers.

Head of MinterEllison's national HR&IR Business Unit, Jim Fox, said the firm will now be able to provide outstanding HR&IR services to organisations with operations in Western Australia.

"We have a top-tier HR&IR law offering and with Kathy and Craig and their team joining us we will now be able to offer that to clients in Western Australia too.

"They have the proven experience to assist clients with the full range of human resources and industrial relations services – from high-level strategic advice, to major litigation, to responding to critical HR and safety issues and for workplace training. In terms of helping us be our clients' best partner, they are a great fit," Mr Fox said.

Ms Reid and Mr Boyle have established reputations in Perth and are acknowledged as market leaders.

Ms Reid has previously built an impressive practice and developed a strong team of lawyers servicing a large network of clients across Western Australia and beyond. She advises across a broad range of employment law issues and industry sectors, including energy and resources, infrastructure and construction, media, government authorities and health care.

Mr Boyle is a workplace relations and safety specialist and works with clients in the construction, engineering, agriculture, transport and logistics, mining and mining services sectors. A significant aspect of his practice is industrial relations advice, dispute resolution and enterprise bargaining.

Both are recommended as leading lawyers in the Doyles Guide 2016.

MinterEllison's Western Australia Managing Partner, Adam Handley, said he was delighted to welcome two high-calibre partners and their team to the firm in Perth.

"Kathy and Craig's practices align perfectly with our significant Government and Corporate practice in Western Australia. The addition of such a strong workplace relations and safety team rounds out our offering in this market.

"Their appointment continues our already strong growth in Western Australia, where we are seeing double digit year-on-year growth across our Perth practice," Mr Handley said.

Ms Reid and Mr Boyle said MinterEllison's highly-respected national HR&IR team will provide valuable resourcing, knowledge management and business development support, enhancing their highly-responsive and commercially-savvy local practice.

"Our clients increasingly have complex work they need done, often quite urgently and involving other locations in Australia and Asia, not just Western Australia," Ms Reid said.

"By the same token, we have a number of significant WA-based clients who want genuine depth of knowledge of the local market and the resources to deal with their employment and safety challenges here.

"The opportunity to join the MinterEllison team enables us to meet both of these needs and continue the prompt and pragmatic service for which we are known. We were also attracted by the strong growth of MinterEllison in Western Australia and the quality and breadth of its expanding WA practice," Ms Reid noted.

Mr Boyle added that the new team in Perth would also be able to bring its extensive knowledge of the Western Australian industrial landscape to benefit MinterEllison's national clients and significant pool of foreign investor clients, many of whom are entering the Australian market for the first time.
