Profile

Tim is a partner in Carey Olsen's British Virgin Islands (BVI) Dispute Resolution and Litigation team.

Tim has over 15 years' experience of high profile and complex cross-border litigation and insolvency work, and has been a partner in the BVI for over 4 years.  

Tim is well suited to the "fused profession" offshore. He is qualified as a Solicitor and Barrister and regularly appears in Court. He is a confident and highly competent advocate, and is a trusted advisor with a commercial and pragmatic outlook.     

Tim's recent work in the BVI has focused on cross-border fraud and asset tracing, and all forms corporate insolvency work, including liquidation. He is regularly instructed on an emergency basis in relation to interim remedies such as freezing injunctions, the appointment of receivers, and Norwich Pharmacal relief (third party disclosure orders).  Tim has particular experience in acting for and against liquidators, in shareholder disputes and unfair prejudice petitions, trust disputes,  fraud work, and complex multi-jurisdictional cases emanating especially from Asia and South America. He is often appointed by the Court to act as next friend or guardian ad litem in trusts disputes. He is also well versed in new litigation trends such as cryto-currency disputes and cases involving economic sanctions and related regulatory issues.

Professional Career

Significant Accomplishments

Tim studied Law at Cambridge University and trained at Herbert Smith Freehills in London. He qualified as a Solicitor in 2009, and subsequently as a Solicitor Advocate and Barrister (Lincoln's Inn, London). In London, Tim also worked at a major US firm and a boutique litigation firm . He was admitted to practice in the BVI in March 2015 and orginally joined Carey Olsen's BVI office in September 2016. He re-joined Carey Olsen in December 2020 having been head of litigation at another offshore law firm in the BVI for two years.    

Aside from his usual commercial work, Tim has experience in Caribbean criminal appeals on a pro bono basis. He has taken two Jamaican murder appeals to full hearings at the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and received judicial recognition for his efforts.

Tim is a member of INSOL and sits on the Board of the BVI’s Recovery and Insolvency Specialists Association (RISA).
