Minter Ellison continues to grow its successful construction practice in Asia

August, 2012 - Sydney, New South Wales

Minter Ellison today announced that construction specialist Henry Sherman has joined the firm in Hong Kong as a Senior Consultant. Mr Sherman's appointment continues the rapid expansion of the firm's successful Asian construction practice in response to a flourishing portfolio of work. Since March, Minter Ellison has also added an additional partner to the team with the promotion of construction front-end and back-end specialist Malcolm Chin, and appointed Alice To as a Consultant.

Commenting on the latest appointment, head of Minter Ellison's Asian Construction, Engineering & Infrastructure practice Steven Yip said the firm was delighted to welcome a practitioner with Mr Sherman's depth of experience. "Henry has 35 years working in Europe, Asia and internationally. He further enhances our specialist construction capabilities in Greater China, particularly in the key areas of dispute resolution, arbitration and ADR."

Before joining Minter Ellison, Mr Sherman was a partner of CMS Cameron McKenna (and legacy firm, McKenna & Co) in London and Hong Kong for more than twenty-five years. He has represented domestic and international clients in major infrastructure projects and arbitrations in the UK and internationally conducted under the rules of the ICC, UNCITRAL and other bodies, as well as English court proceedings and in relation to all forms of ADR.

His Hong Kong experience includes advising on major disputes arising from the transport infrastructure network for the then new Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok airport, where he represented the Hong Kong Government, and significant commercial claims for Chinese, Australian and other clients.

Mr Sherman will work closely with Steven Yip and Malcolm Chin, as well as Nigel Francis, head of Minter Ellison's Asian Dispute Resolution practice. Mr Chin, who was promoted to partner on 1 July 2012, advises developers, contractors, consultants and government departments on project procurement and disputes relating to civil and infrastructure works, and residential and commercial developments.

The other major construction practice-related appointment this year, Ms Alice To, is a former Legal Director of Pinsent Masons, Hong Kong. She is an accredited mediator and accredited adjudicator of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre as well as a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. She has taken up different government appointments including Task Forces on the Competition Bill and Security of Payment, and the Housing Appeal Panel.

Fred Kinmonth, Chairman of Minter Ellison is Asia, said the firm's regional strategy is bearing fruit. "Across Asia we are focusing on key areas where we have strong client support and specialist skills and experience to offer. The continued growth of our very successful construction and infrastructure practice in Greater China is in response to client demand and an impressive portfolio of work."
