Kochhar & Co., First Indian law firm to procure the Japanese Gaikokuho-Jimu-Bengoshi license

August, 2012 - New Delhi, India

Kochhar & Co. became the first Indian law firm to procure approvals from the Ministry of Justice in Japan to practice Indian law in Tokyo. Based on the said approvals, our firm was successful in obtaining the ‘Gaikokuho-Jimu-Bengoshi’ registration with the bar association of Tokyo and one of our lawyers, Ms. Rianna Lobo has been relocated as the Resident Attorney of the Tokyo office and will be stationed there for two years.

The arduous process of myriad formalities, approval, paperwork, interviews and registrations to procure a Japanese foreign license took the firm almost two years. Located in Akasaka commercial district in Tokyo, the office has been established with the objective to provide advice on Indian laws and to facilitate communication between its clients in Japan and the various Kochhar offices in India. The office will not be practicing Japanese law.

The office will draw a much higher degree of comfort for Japanese companies as the office apart from having an Indian qualified lawyer also has a Japanese manager who can assist with better communication. The Japanese companies can now reach out to the firm not only in their own time zone but also in their own city and within an environment that is closer to their own culture.
